The Town hall in Vicenza, Basilica Palladiana |
The
Town hall in Vicenza, Basilica Palladiana is located in Vicenza, Italy and was
constructed in the 15th Century. The building is for the public and
faces the Piazza dei Signori which houses a number of shops on the ground
floor. The building has a copper roof and is completed with the Torre Di Piazza
bell tower. The tower is 270 feet (82 m) tall with a square base of 23 feet
(7m) wide. Again facing the Piazz dei Signori on the bell tower there is an
embedded a sculpture of Madonna with Child and the Saint Stephen and Vincent,
with a model of the town.
At
the beginning of the 16th century the building was going through a
rough period where the double order of porticoes (order of columns) and loggias
was not completed and collapsed. The city decided to fix the building by call
many architects to fix the problem of its reconstruction. At the end the
project was given to the young architect Andrea Palladio. Andrea Palladio
redesigned the building by adding loggias with serliana openings with white
marble so keep that Gothic style touch to it. The reconstruction of the
building was called Basilica, which gave it the name it has today, Palladio was
inspired by the model of Roman Basilica used.
